WordPress and AI - the big change

WordPress is about to undergo a fundamental change. Away from endless clicking and searching through menus - towards a future where you simply control your website by voice. «Create a new blog post» or «Show me last week's sales figures», and it happens. This is no longer science fiction, but the vision behind a new generation of tools that will be integrated directly into WordPress and is on the roadmap for the future WordPress version 7.0.

New interfaces: REST API vs. MCP

The WordPress REST API is powerful, but it comes from a different era. It works stateless, i.e. like individual letters without context. But modern AI agents need dialog, context and the ability to dynamically discover a website's capabilities. This is where the MCP protocol comes in: it enables real conversations and context so that an AI can ask the site «What can you do?» and find the tools and answers directly.

The solution: Abilities API

WordPress now comes with the Abilities API. This is not just another tool, but a kind of universal map for everything your website can do. The API creates a central, searchable register. Every function, from «Create post» to «Update product», is given a clear description and a label. This allows any AI or external system to immediately recognize what is possible and how it works. An Ability thus bundles a function (e.g. «Publish post») with all the information that an external system needs: Inputs, outputs, authorizations and the reference to the code.

The MCP adapter: the bridge to AI

The MCP Adapter is the centerpiece. It works like a universal translator between WordPress and the AI world. It presents the Abilities as usable tools for the AI and translates WordPress data into context-rich resources. This allows an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini to use the website functions like their own tools, seamlessly and efficiently.

This fundamentally changes how we manage WordPress websites. A website can become a personal assistant. Instead of clicking through five admin pages, you simply say what you want and WordPress does the rest in the background.

All of this is also exciting for an e-commerce workflow: a single sentence can replace dozens of clicks in WooCommerce: «Create a brand, three products and assign them to the brand.» Or you can ask for the sales figures and get the report immediately without having to navigate through menus.

Content creation: the game changer

WordPress has already introduced block-based comments with 6.9 and makes it easier to collaborate on shared blog posts. In the future, it will also be possible to integrate an AI into the content creation process and not only reformulate paragraphs, but also design them. For example: «Turn this list into a table» or «Create a customer testimonial from this statement and check the facts in the article and provide the sources.»

To summarize, we can say that WordPress is AI-ready and even more will be possible. Administration will be easier for everyone. Complex tasks can be automated and WordPress is opening up to the huge world of AI tools.

WordPress is future-proof and ready for whatever comes next in the field of AI.
