DNS
DNS stands for Domain Name System and works like the phone book of the internet. It translates a domain like flinkthink.ch into the IP address of the server where the website is hosted.
There are various entries in the DNS zone of a domain. The A record points to the IP address of the web server, the CNAME redirects a subdomain to another name, and MX entries determine which server receives the emails. TXT entries are used for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, which are used for email authentication.
Changes do not take effect immediately. How long an entry is cached is controlled by the TTL value. In practice, most changes are active after a few minutes, but full propagation can take up to 48 hours. Therefore, when changing servers, we always plan for a buffer.
We take care of updates, security and operations with the service pack.
