A sitemap is a kind of “map” of a website, which provides an overview of its structure and layout. A sitemap usually helps search engines to read the structure and hierarchical arrangement of a website. There are rarely sitemaps that are created for visitors to a website, as they should be able to navigate the website intuitively.

With WordPress the XML sitemap is usually generated automatically and updates itself as soon as new content is added. It is submitted in Google Search Console so that new pages are found faster.

A sitemap is a suggestion, not a guarantee. It makes sure search engines learn about a page, but does not decide whether it is included. Pages that should not appear in the search results do not belong in it in the first place.
