WordPress is our favorite CMS (content management system). It is freely available as so-called “open source” software and is continually developed by a huge community. With Plugins and Themes the range of functions can be greatly extended. Since version 5, WordPress has also included the Gutenberg-editor, which lets you design your own content even better.

WordPress started in 2003 as blogging software and is now a fully-featured content management system. It runs on your own server or with a host, and the data belongs to the operator. This is precisely what distinguishes it from modular website builders, where content and design reside on the provider's platform.

The range of functions can be extended via plugins, from online shops to newsletters. This openness is both a strength and a risk: every extension needs to be maintained. Regular updates of the core, plugins, and theme are therefore not an optional extra, but a prerequisite for a secure website.
