Nofollow

The Nofollow tag is applied in the HTML code of a web page in connection with (mostly external) links and gives search engines the indication that the web page is not directly related to this link. The interconnectedness of pages through links on the Internet is an important factor for search engines to assess the quality and relevance of individual pages.

Since 2019, Google has treated the attribute as a hint rather than a strict instruction. In addition, there is rel=”sponsored” for paid links and rel=”ugc” for content contributed by users themselves.

In practice, nofollow belongs on paid links and on references you do not want to vouch for. It does not belong on internal links: if you want to keep your own pages out of the index, use NoIndex.
