Breadcrumbs
Translated literally, breadcrumbs are crumbs of bread, hence breadcrumb navigation. Breadcrumbs are navigation elements that are often placed in the upper part of the website. These crumbs make it relatively easy to navigate within the website structure.
An example could look like this:
Home > Offer > Web design with WordPress
Incidentally, the term breadcrumb comes from the fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel”, who used crumbs to mark their way back home. Breadcrumbs make it very easy to find your way back to the relevant pages and avoid getting lost in the website forest.
Breadcrumbs do not only help people. With the appropriate structured data type, Google recognizes the structure and displays it in the search engine results instead of the bare address.
They make sense wherever content sits on several levels, for example on service pages with subpages or in an online shop. A flat website with five pages does not need them.
