user interface

A user interface is the interface that connects a user with the underlying system or machine. The user interface itself is therefore not what the user communicates with, but merely the interface.

The user interface includes everything that is visible and operable: buttons, menus, form fields, icons, spacing and colors. It translates the functions of a system into something people can understand and trigger.

A user interface is best designed with reusable building blocks. When buttons, forms and notices look and work the same everywhere, nobody has to learn how to use them twice. That is exactly why we set up a design system for our projects. A good user interface is the foundation for Usability, but it does not yet guarantee a successful user experience.
